Lauren Scruggs Kennedy
Lauren Scruggs Kennedy - Sister/ Daughter/ Wife/ Wellness Warrior/ NY Best-Selling Author/ Blogger
....and possibly one of the sweetest girls I have ever met ;-)
I love it when I meet people that truly stand out from the crowd and Lauren Scruggs Kennedy is one of those people for SO many reasons.
I was thrilled when she accepted my invitation to sit down and chat over lunch at the Beverly Hills Hotel for "Lulu Loves". This is the first in a series of interviews with people who inspire me and I could not think of a more perfect role model to kick it off!
I love listening to people's stories and find it so fascinating how circumstances we cannot control take us down certain paths. Lauren's story highlights the power of positivity when life really throws you for a loop.
I first heard about Lauren a couple of years ago and was impressed by her story and miraculous recovery from a horrible accident. I didn't know all the overwhelming details quite yet….
Before meeting with Lauren, I read her heartwarming biography, Still LoLo, (which I highly recommend) in which Lauren and her family talk about the accident that forever changed their lives. It’s a beautiful story of hope, faith and perseverance.
After walking in to an airplane propeller in 2011 while exiting the plane, Lauren suffered extensive damage to the left side of her body. Amongst her many injuries, Lauren lost her left hand and eye and faced a long road of surgeries and rehabilitation. The odds were truly against her and the months following the accident were horrifying and challenging for her and her family. Lauren, surrounded by loving friends and family, made incredible progress. Her first steps of recovery in the hospital were critical and she survived with incredible perseverance. She continued to show determination, grace and strength as she and her family learned to adjust to this new normal after the accident and recovery. Through her strong faith, incredibly supportive family and friends Lauren healed and was able to look at her situation as a gift to better her own life and the life of others.
Today Lauren is thriving, happily married and living in Los Angeles while running her lifestyle blog https://laurenscruggskennedy.com.
In 2016, Lauren launched The Lauren Scruggs Kennedy Foundation, http://www.lskfoundation.com. The main focus of the foundation is to bring hope, restore dignity and ignite faith in girls and women with limb loss by providing beautiful cosmetic coverings for prostheses. Lauren experienced first hand how a dramatic change in your appearance affected her perception of herself, and her goal is to help other girls feel beautiful inside and out regardless of what happened to their bodies.
In addition, Lauren has partnered with Bethany Hamilton, professional surfer who lost her arm in a shark attack, to host yearly retreats to empower girls with limb loss. Its important to both Bethany and Lauren that these girls feel understood and loved. They set out to create a community which encourages one another on their journey. The response has been amazing for both attendees as well as Lauren and Bethany - http://www.friendsofbethany.com/beautifully-flawed-retreat-encouraging-young-women-with-limb-loss/
Because of their accidents, Lauren and Bethany have become close friends and share a special bond. Lauren explained to me how Bethany was such an incredible support for her during her recovery. When I asked if Lauren views her accident as a blessing in disguise she immediately said yes! It gave her life a new life purpose and connected her with so many amazing people whom she now considers some of her closest friends. She actually met her husband, Jason Kennedy, after connecting with Giuliana Rancic (television hosts and breast cancer survivor) after the accident and truly believes that life took her in this direction for a reason.
I am so inspired and fascinated by Lauren. She chooses to look at the glass half full everyday and is making it her life goal to help others. She is an inspiration and has become a role model for all. Lauren's recovery is an ongoing process, and she is still learning and adjusting as she goes but she does so with a smile on her face and an incredible attitude.
Lauren, thank you so much for sharing your story. I am humbled and inspired by you and wish you all the best. Can’t wait to see what the future holds for you. I am honored to have you in the LumillaMingus family ;-)
